I have read the third book in the trilogy about three times – but though I have persevered, I found I could not seem to get into Titus Alone really. That event is the catalyst for everything that happens in the series, from Finally, in the third book, Titus Alone, when he thinks back to leaving the castle he feels no shame in that act, which I believe he would feel if he had been running away. The Gormenghast trilogy, by far Mervyn Peake's best known work as a writer, has many fans, including myself. Mervyn Peake was a brilliant, badass English artist, illustrator, poet, and writer–today, he's best-known for his Titus books (Titus Groan, Gormenghast, Titus Alone, and, in a few short months, the posthumous Titus Awakes). Anthony Burgess, Mervyn Peake, Quentin Crisp. It is not my intention to narrate the actual books here (there's no point). Titus is the most important character in the Gormenghast series, and Peake intended the novels to tell the story of his life, beginning with his birth in Titus Groan.
